Every prospective owner of Bulldogs should know that much in the dog's health and temperament depends on its early age and the breeder is the only person who is responsible for the further progress of the puppy. It is impossible to predict if the puppy will be a show champion, but buying from a reputable breeder, you are guaranteed to get a high quality and well-tempered animal.
Usually knowledgeable breeders make lifetime commitments to the improvement of one, rarely two breeds. They know everything possible about typical health problems and special needs of the breed. They have studied and researched the breed for many years and know its history and purpose, its drawbacks and strong points. Reliable breeders will never claim that their Bulldogs are perfect and will neither blacken other breeders.
As Bulldogs have several typical inherited disorders, every litter should be planned carefully to avoid defective genes. The main goal of all responsible breeders is producing puppies that are better than their parents. If the breeder produces only pet quality puppies, he/she cannot be trusted, even if you want just want it as a family pet.
Every breeder tries to sell puppies to loving and responsible homes. So, if the breeder persuades you to buy a Bulldog and seems to get rid of the
dog, he cannot be called responsible. True breed fanciers will never sell their Bulldog puppies to pet stores,
wholesalers and dealers, because they should know the future owners of their dogs to be sure they are in good hands. If the buyer is not the right person to own Bulldogs, a trustworthy breeder will refuse to sell the dog to him/her.
